A storage bench earns its floor space twice: it gives you somewhere to put things and may also provide a useful perch. The catch is that the outside dimensions do not tell you how much will fit inside, how far the lid needs to open or whether the height works comfortably beside a bed, in a hallway or at the end of a sofa.
Start with the outside footprint
Measure the available width and depth, then mark the footprint on the floor. In a hallway, keep the normal walking route clear. At the end of a bed, include the space you need to move around both the bench and the bed frame. A deep upholstered bench can feel much larger in a room than its width alone suggests.
Internal capacity matters more than the headline volume
Litres are useful for comparing two boxes of a similar shape, but the internal length, width and depth are more helpful if you need to store particular items. Blankets, shoes, toys and bags use space differently. If internal measurements are published, compare them with the largest item you expect to store rather than relying only on total capacity.
Allow room for the lid
A hinged top needs clear space to open. Check whether the lid rises vertically, folds, or needs clearance behind the bench. A storage bench placed tightly against a wall or radiator may not open as freely as the product photograph suggests. Soft-close or safety hinges can be useful, but their presence should be confirmed from the exact model specification.
Seat height changes how the bench feels
If you intend to sit on it while putting on shoes, compare its height with a dining chair or another seat you already find comfortable. Very low benches can be awkward to stand from; taller models may feel less relaxed and can sit visually high against a bed.
Check whether it is actually designed for sitting
Do not assume that every upholstered storage box is a seat. Look for a stated load limit or manufacturer description that specifically allows sitting. The lid construction is particularly important on folding fabric ottomans, where the internal divider or base may be part of the structure.
