Storage chests and benches often look interchangeable online, but they solve slightly different problems. The better choice depends on whether you need seating, what you intend to store and how much space is available to open the lid.
A bench has to work at sitting height
If the top will be used for putting on shoes, check seat height and stated load guidance rather than treating every box as furniture for sitting.
Lift-up lids need room
A hinged lid may need space behind and above the unit. Check whether a wall, radiator, coat rail or windowsill interferes with its movement.
Internal shape matters
A single large cavity suits blankets and bags, while divided storage can make shoes and small items easier to organise.
Depth is critical in hallways
A few centimetres of extra depth can narrow a busy route. Mark the complete closed footprint before comparing finishes.
