The most useful side-table height depends on where the table will sit. A table beside a sofa has a different job from a bedside table, even when the furniture looks similar.

Beside a sofa
Compare the tabletop with the sofa arm and seat height. The aim is comfortable reach without forcing the user to stretch down or lift objects awkwardly.
Beside a bed
Measure the top of the mattress, including the mattress and bed-frame height together. A bedside surface close to that level is usually easier to reach.
Check the footprint
A narrow top can still sit on wide feet or a basket base. Measure the largest width and depth at floor level.
Allow drawers and baskets to open
Storage tables need clear space in front or beside them. Check that a drawer will not clash with the sofa, bed or wall.
Consider lamps and sockets
If the table will hold a lamp or charging equipment, plan the cable route and leave safe access to sockets.
