Only Murders’ Teacup Clutter Has a Useful Side-Table Lesson

A room can reveal its owner through the objects left on its furniture. In Only Murders in the Building, even the abandoned cups have a reason to be there. For a real living room, that detail suggests a useful question: where do the things you use every day actually land?

In the Daily Bruin’s September 2022 interview with the show’s design team, set decorator Rich Murray describes Oliver’s surfaces being littered with teacups because the character forgets them when answering the door. Production designer Curt Beech also discusses planning around where a character would sit. These are documented set-design decisions, not a reason to recreate Oliver’s clutter.

The practical takeaway: give each regular seat a landing place

Before buying a new table, sit in your usual place with the things you normally use: a drink, glasses, a book or a remote. Where do you reach naturally? A fashionable table across the room will not solve the problem if everything still ends up on the sofa arm.

Test the reach before the style

Use an existing stable table to try a position. Check whether you can put down a drink without leaning awkwardly or twisting around the chair. Then stand up and walk out. A convenient surface is not convenient if it blocks the only easy route past the seat.

Measure the proposed top height against the seat and armrest you actually use. A high sofa arm can obstruct a low side table; a tall table can feel awkward beside a low chair. There is no universal table height that suits every combination.

Three modern VASAGLE rustic-brown nesting tables with black frames
A modern catalogue alternative for occasional surfaces—not furniture identified in Only Murders in the Building.

When nesting tables earn their floor space

A nesting set can provide a spare surface when someone takes a different seat. It is most useful if you have a clear place to store the pieces together again. If all three remain permanently spread around the room, compare their combined occupied space with separate tables instead.

The VASAGLE LNT14BX set is one existing catalogue example. It has engineered-wood tops with a rustic-brown finish and black steel frames—not solid timber. Our catalogue lists the largest table at approximately 58.7 × 51.9 × 45.5 cm. Verify each table’s current size, load guidance and assembly requirements with the retailer.

Separate temporary objects from permanent storage

A table for a cup is different from a cupboard for paperwork. If loose items keep covering the top, list what they are before choosing extra shelves. Books may need an open shelf; small cables may be easier to keep in a container. Avoid buying a larger tabletop simply to hold a growing pile.

Our coffee-table planning guide helps compare central surfaces with tables beside seats. For a chair that still feels uncomfortable after moving the table, check usable seat width, depth and height rather than trying to fix the seating with more accessories.

Keep the character, lose the obstacle course

A personal room does not need a matching suite or every object hidden away. Keep the items you enjoy seeing, but make a home for what interrupts daily use. Try moving one existing surface and living with it before ordering another.
