How to Plan a Home-Office Desk Setup

A home-office desk needs to fit the equipment, the person using it and the room around it. Start with those three things before choosing a colour or deciding that an adjustable desk will solve every problem.

Lay out the equipment first

Put the keyboard, mouse, screen base and anything else you use regularly within a proposed desktop outline. Include a notebook, documents or other task-specific equipment rather than planning only for a neatly staged computer. Check the space left for the mouse and the depth occupied by plugs behind a monitor or docking station.

A wider top is not automatically more useful if a large pedestal or integrated storage takes away the space you need. Look at the clear working surface and legroom, not just the outside measurements. Confirm whether cable trays, hooks and other accessories are supplied or optional extras.

Measure before you shortlist

100 or 120cm wide? Test the equipment, not the photograph

The two desk examples below both have a 60cm-deep top. An extra 20cm of width gives more sideways space; it does not create extra depth behind a screen. Mark the proposed top on a table or on paper and arrange your actual equipment inside it.

100 × 60cm top

Start with the smaller footprint if the room is tight, then check whether your equipment leaves usable space for the mouse and everyday tasks.

120 × 60cm top

Test whether the extra width solves your actual constraint. A deep screen stand or rear-facing connector may still be the limiting factor.

These are dimension comparisons, not claims that a particular top fits a given number of monitors. Confirm the exact variant, accessories and current specification with the retailer. The manufacturer’s 100 × 60cm black desk page identifies model 3000846.1.

Your six-measurement desk worksheet

  1. Available room footprint: measure between walls, radiators and other furniture, allowing for skirting and access to sockets.
  2. Equipment footprint: note the width and depth occupied by the screen stand, keyboard, mouse movement and regular paperwork.
  3. Rear clearance: include connectors and cable bends; check whether a monitor-arm clamp can fit the actual top and frame.
  4. Clear space underneath: check the gap between legs or storage units, plus any crossbar, drawer or cable tray that reduces legroom.
  5. Chair movement: measure with the chair tucked in and pulled back, and test access past it. These are different positions.
  6. Height and travel: for an adjustable desk, check the seated and standing settings and the entire movement path, with cables connected safely.

Keep these measurements with your shortlist and compare like-for-like: overall desk dimensions are not the same as unobstructed working space. If the setup only works after moving the chair or unplugging equipment, revisit the room layout before ordering.

Treat the chair and desk as one setup

The Health and Safety Executive’s guidance considers the whole workstation, including the chair, screen, keyboard, mouse and work environment. Its posture guidance includes keeping the main equipment in front of you and positioning the keyboard and mouse to avoid unnecessary reaching or twisting. A product labelled ergonomic does not establish that it fits every person or task.

Check that your chair can move into the desk without its arms catching on the top or a drawer. Look for enough clear space for your legs and feet. A fixed-height desk and a height-adjustable chair still need to work together; neither item should be judged only from its own feature list.

Check both ends of an adjustable desk’s range

For a sit-stand desk, compare the minimum height with your seated setup and the maximum with your intended standing position. Saved height settings can be convenient, but they do not decide the appropriate positions for you. Check whether the published range refers to the working surface or only the frame when a top is sold separately.

A desktop converter is a different solution: it sits on an existing desk and adds another structure above it. Check the converter’s lowest working position, its footprint, its keyboard platform and the load limit of both the converter and the furniture supporting it. It is not automatically interchangeable with a complete adjustable desk.

Plan cables and the movement around the desk

Locate power sockets before choosing a position. With an adjustable desk, allow the cables to move through the full travel without tension or snagging. Keep the path clear of shelves, windowsills and other furniture, and follow the manufacturer’s assembly, loading and safe-use instructions.

Test the space needed to push the chair back, reach storage and get past the desk. Keep frequently used items accessible without crowding the working surface. Consider screen reflections and the lighting at the times of day you actually use the room, not just how the space looks in a photograph.

Use guidance, not a furniture label, for workstation assessment

Browse the desk selection to compare published dimensions and adjustment features. For work involving display-screen equipment, use the HSE’s workstation-assessment guidance and posture information alongside the appropriate assessment arrangements for your situation. This buying guide is not an individual workstation assessment or a medical recommendation.

Check what an eBay desk listing actually includes

Distinguish a complete desk from a frame-only listing, separate desktop, converter or accessory. For an adjustable model, confirm that the correct controller, power supply, cables and assembly fixings are included. A familiar brand name does not establish that parts from another model are compatible.

For a used desk, ask for the model number, actual assembled dimensions and photographs of the top, underside, joints and any damaged edges. Ask the seller to demonstrate adjustment through its range where applicable. Include collection, dismantling and reassembly in your decision; check that the instructions and required parts are available.
