Bar Stool Height Guide: Counter Stools vs Bar Stools

The correct stool height is determined by the surface it sits under. Kitchen counters and higher bar tables often need different seat heights, so measure before choosing a style.

Measure to the underside

Measure from the floor to the underside of the counter or tabletop. This is more useful than measuring to the top when the surface is thick or has a deep apron underneath.

Compare the seat height

Use the published seat height, not the overall stool height. Backrests can make two stools look very different while the sitting position is identical.

Leave comfortable legroom

The distance between the seat and the underside of the counter should allow comfortable thigh and knee clearance.

Adjustable stools

Check the full adjustment range and remember that the footrest and base move relative to the user. The lowest and highest settings both need to work safely in the intended space.

Plan side-to-side spacing

Wide seats, armrests and swivel movement can reduce how many stools fit comfortably along a counter.
