Recliner Chair Size Guide: Wall Clearance, Seat Height and Fully Reclined Depth

A recliner can look compact when upright and become one of the deepest pieces of furniture in the room once the back lowers and the footrest extends. Measuring only the closed chair is therefore one of the easiest ways to buy a recliner that technically fits but is awkward to use.

Quick answer: how much space does a recliner need?

Use the exact model’s fully reclined width and depth, required wall clearance and operating instructions—not just its upright dimensions. Keep a usable walking route in the open position. An advertised reclining angle alone does not establish the floor space required.

Measure both footprints

Mark the chair's upright width and depth first, then repeat the exercise using the manufacturer's fully reclined dimensions. Keep the normal walking route clear in both positions and include any forward movement of the footrest.

Check wall clearance

Some recliners can sit relatively close to a wall, while others need significant space behind the backrest. Use the exact wall-clearance figure where the manufacturer gives one rather than assuming that every push-back chair moves in the same way.

Seat height and depth still matter

Reclining does not make an unsuitable seat fit better. Compare seat height and usable seat depth with a chair you already find comfortable, particularly if the chair will be used for long periods.

Plan cables for powered chairs

Power recliners and lift chairs need a safe route to a socket. Keep cables away from the moving mechanism and do not place extension leads where the chair can roll, rock or close onto them.

Your recliner measuring sheet

  • Closed: overall width, depth and height.
  • Open: fully reclined footprint, footrest extension and back movement.
  • Person fit: usable seat width, seat depth, seat height and arm position.
  • Operation: lever or control access, socket and cable route if powered.
  • Installation: delivery route, assembly space and the maker’s fixing or clearance instructions.

Mark the closed and open outlines with removable tape, then use the room normally. Open nearby doors and drawers, walk past the footrest and check whether you can reach a side table. If the maker does not publish a required measurement, ask before buying rather than extrapolating from a photograph.

A catalogue example: the closed footprint does not describe the space needed to recline.

Example to compare: HOMCOM 833-702V71BU

The blue HOMCOM wingback recliner has catalogue upright dimensions of approximately 77 × 88 × 102 cm. Those are not fully reclined dimensions. Verify seat measurements, total open depth and required rear clearance for the exact model with the retailer.
