How to Measure Furniture Delivery Access Before You Order

Room dimensions are only half the job when you are buying larger furniture. A sofa, wardrobe, sideboard or bed can fit perfectly once assembled but still be impossible to carry through the route to the room.

Start at the outside door

Measure the clear opening rather than the nominal door size. Open the door as far as it will go and measure the narrowest usable width and height between the frame, handle and any fixed obstruction.

Follow the entire route

Walk from the delivery point to the final position and note every pinch point: porch doors, hallways, radiators, bannisters, ceiling slopes and internal doors. The narrowest measurement is not always the deciding one because corners require room to rotate the item.

Measure stairs and landings

On stairs, check width between the wall and handrail, ceiling height above the steps, and the depth of any landing where the item must turn. A tall wardrobe panel or long sofa may need substantially more diagonal clearance than its width suggests.

Use packaged dimensions where available

Flat-pack furniture is often easier to deliver because it arrives as panels, but do not assume the box is small. Long wardrobe sides and bed rails can create their own problems. For assembled furniture, the packaged dimensions may be larger than the finished product because of protective packing.

Removable parts can change the calculation

Some sofas have removable legs or backs, and some tables arrive with legs detached. Only rely on that where the manufacturer or retailer confirms the construction; do not plan to dismantle a product in a way its instructions do not support.

Compare both room fit and delivery fit

Before buying, keep two sets of measurements: the space where the furniture will live, and the smallest clearances along the route to it. Our product pages record useful dimensions where the manufacturer supplies them, but always check the current retailer listing for packaging and delivery details before ordering.

Your furniture delivery measuring sheet

Keep this sheet with the exact model and retailer offer you are considering. Record each box separately: a single assembled measurement is not a substitute for the size and weight of the packages that will actually arrive.

Why a wide doorway is not a complete fit test

1. Door opening
Clear width + height
2. Turning area
Room to rotate the package
3. Next obstruction
Wall, handrail or ceiling
Access schematic, not to scale. Check the whole movement path, not one isolated opening.

A box might be narrow enough for the door but too long to turn immediately beyond it. Equally, a hallway that looks generous at floor level can narrow at a handrail or radiator. A diagonal measurement alone is not a reliable guarantee that the item will make every turn.

What to ask the retailer before ordering

  • Can you confirm the packed dimensions and weight for every box of this exact model?
  • Does it arrive assembled, flat-packed or in approved removable sections?
  • What access restrictions apply to stairs, lifts or upper floors?
  • Does the selected delivery service include the final room, unpacking or assembly?
  • What happens if the delivery team cannot safely complete access?

Send the retailer your route measurements and photographs when access is tight or unusual. Do not assume delivery staff will remove doors, dismantle furniture or use an external lifting method. Confirm any such arrangements in advance with the appropriate provider.

Check the room before checking out

Use our compact sofa size guide, wardrobe clearance guide and dressing-table measuring guide for the furniture’s working footprint. Then return to your shortlist and confirm the current retailer’s delivery terms before purchasing.

This is a planning checklist, not a professional access assessment or a guarantee of delivery. See also John Lewis & Partners’ delivery-access information; the terms of the retailer you actually buy from take precedence.
