An armchair can fit the empty patch of floor and still feel wrong once you sit in it. Overall width and depth decide whether the chair fits the room, but seat height, seat depth, usable seat width and the space around the chair determine how practical it is day to day.
Start with the complete footprint
Measure the chair’s overall width and depth, then mark that rectangle on the floor. Include projecting arms, legs and any angled back rather than measuring only the seat. Leave a comfortable walking route around the chair and check whether nearby doors, drawers or cupboards can still open.
Seat height changes how easy the chair is to use
Compare the published seat height with a chair you already find comfortable. A lower seat can create a relaxed lounge position but usually requires more effort to stand from; a higher seat changes the knee and hip angle. The outside height of the chair does not tell you its seat height.
Seat depth affects posture
Deep seats encourage a more reclined position and may suit taller users differently from shorter users. Measure from the front of a comfortable chair seat to the back cushion and compare that with the published usable seat depth. Thick loose cushions can reduce the usable depth considerably.
Usable width is not overall width
Wide arms can make a substantial armchair surprisingly narrow inside. When the manufacturer publishes seat width, use that measurement to compare sitting space and the overall width to plan the room.
Rocking and reclining chairs need extra clearance
A rocker needs clear floor around its moving base. A recliner can extend both forward and backward, so its closed footprint is not enough for room planning. Check the manufacturer’s fully reclined dimensions and any stated wall clearance before buying.
Check construction and load guidance
Frame material, cushion construction and upholstery all affect the character of a chair, but do not infer a load limit from appearance. Use the manufacturer’s stated maximum load where available and follow its assembly and floor-protection instructions.
