A second-hand sideboard can offer useful storage without buying a new cabinet, but the attractive front photograph is only the beginning. Check the exact size, condition, included parts and collection arrangements before comparing its price with a new alternative.

Four checks before you shortlist
Fit
Full footprint, door swing and delivery route.
Condition
Close-ups, working drawers and sound joints.
Completeness
Shelves, pins, handles and required fixings.
Total cost
Purchase, transport and any uncertain repairs.
Start with the storage you need
List what the cabinet will hold: crockery, paperwork, serving pieces or other objects. Measure the tallest and widest items and ask for clear shelf openings where they are not published. Outside dimensions cannot tell you whether a plate, box or appliance fits inside.
Decide whether doors, drawers or an open shelf solve your problem. Check the intended load against the exact model’s guidance; a substantial-looking top is not a verified load rating. If you want a cabinet for a specific heavy item, do not rely on appearance alone.
Measure the cabinet and the route
Ask for overall width, depth and height, including handles, feet and an overhanging top. Mark the footprint in your room, then allow for door swing, drawer extension and the person using the storage. Include skirting gaps and nearby radiators or sockets.
A used sideboard may already be assembled. Check whether it can pass through entrance doors, corridors, turns and stairs in that state. Ask whether legs or other parts can be removed according to the instructions, and who will dismantle or reassemble it. Use our furniture delivery-access checklist before arranging transport.
Request photographs that reveal more than the front
- The complete top in good light, including corners and edges.
- The back, underside, legs and joints.
- Inside each cupboard and drawer, including shelf supports and drawer bottoms.
- Hinges, handles, fixing points and any repaired or damaged areas.
- A model label or other identification where available.
Ask the seller to distinguish cosmetic marks from functional problems. Scratches, swollen panels, loose joints and doors that no longer align are different issues. Confirm that all drawers and doors open and close properly and whether the cabinet wobbles on a level surface. If an important area cannot be inspected or explained, treat it as unresolved rather than assuming it is fine.
Do not infer construction from the finish
An oak-coloured cabinet is not necessarily solid oak. A photographed wood pattern does not establish whether the construction is solid wood, veneer or a printed finish over an engineered board. Ask for the model number and published specification, or a clear description from the seller when the original information is unavailable.
Be especially cautious about buying with an untested restoration plan. A finish that looks easy to sand or repaint may not tolerate the process you have in mind. Check the actual material and consider the time, tools and parts required before treating a low purchase price as a bargain.
Check every included part
Confirm the number of shelves, drawers, shelf pins and handles. Ask whether assembly instructions and model-specific brackets or securing parts are available. Missing components can make the cabinet less useful, and replacement parts are not automatically interchangeable across models.
Follow the manufacturer’s assembly and wall-securing instructions where applicable. Do not assume a second-hand cabinet arrives with all the original safety fittings, or that a seller’s previous installation is appropriate for your room and wall.
Compare the total cost, not just the item price
Add any delivery fee or collection costs, including vehicle hire, help carrying the cabinet and suitable protection in transit. Clarify the pickup location, floor level, stairs, parking and who can assist. A collection-only listing can be a poor fit if transport costs or access difficulties outweigh the saving.
List known repair costs separately from uncertain ones. If the condition or required parts are unclear, do not build your budget around a guaranteed inexpensive repair. Compare the total with another used option and with suitable sideboards in our catalogue.
Questions to send the seller
- What are the full assembled dimensions, including projections?
- What is the model, and has the cabinet been altered or repaired?
- Do all doors and drawers work, and are there any loose joints or swollen panels?
- Are all shelves, pins, handles and required brackets included?
- Can you show the back, underside, inside storage and any damage?
- Is it delivered or collected, and what access or carrying help is available?
