Home Again’s Bedroom Lesson: Choose Bedside Storage for Real Life

A beautifully styled bedside table can be surprisingly unhelpful at bedtime. Once a lamp, book, glasses and water arrive, the tiny clear surface in the product photograph may disappear. A useful bedroom starts with those ordinary objects, not with an empty tabletop.

In Architectural Digest’s September 2017 interview about Home Again, director Hallie Meyers-Shyer discusses making Alice’s home feel lived-in, including books on nightstands. She also describes both nightstands as belonging to Alice in the character’s bedroom. Nancy Meyers produced the film. The practical ideas below are our interpretation—not identified furniture from Reese Witherspoon’s home or the movie set.

Start with tonight’s belongings

Put the things you actually keep beside the bed on a piece of paper. Include the lamp’s base and any charger. Measure the arrangement, then decide what must stay on top and what can go below. That gives you a more useful brief than choosing the narrowest table that fits the gap.

Compare the top with the mattress—not the bed frame

Measure the height of the mattress surface where you sleep, then compare the proposed tabletop. Sit and lie in your normal position and check your reach with an existing stable surface. A table that looks aligned with the frame may sit awkwardly low beside a thick mattress.

Check the whole route into bed as well. A wide table can fit between the wall and mattress while making it difficult to change bedding or reach a socket. Allow for skirting boards and any fixing instructions rather than pushing furniture against a wall in your floor plan.

Open shelf, basket or drawer?

An open shelf keeps a book visible and easy to retrieve, but its contents remain part of the room’s appearance. A basket can group loose items, although you need to check the opening and whether you can pull it out beside the bed. A drawer hides more, but needs clear opening space and can be obstructed by bedding.

For occasional bedside storage, the SONGMICS HOME UKLB35ET286W01 three-tier side table is one existing catalogue option to compare. It combines open levels with a fabric basket. The current catalogue does not establish exact dimensions for every finish, so confirm the selected variant’s top height, width, depth and basket opening with the retailer before ordering.

It is a modern functional alternative, not furniture identified in the film. We have not tested it hands-on, and a basket layout is not automatically better than a drawer for your needs.

Two sides of the bed can have different jobs

You do not have to buy identical pieces if the two available gaps or storage needs differ. Compare useful top heights and materials so the arrangement feels deliberate, but let each side solve its own problem. One person may need a clear reading surface; another may value concealed storage.

Before ordering two tables, test both footprints. A wardrobe door, radiator or bedroom entrance can make one side behave very differently. Our small-bedroom layout guide helps you compare the complete room rather than treating the bedside gap in isolation.

Keep the lived-in feeling without a crowded top

Leave enough usable surface to put something down without moving three other objects first. Route cables without trapping them or crossing a walking route, and follow the lamp and furniture makers’ instructions. Keep drinks away from electrical connections and check care guidance before using a surface for water or hot cups.

Try rearranging your current bedside storage for a few nights before buying. The best lesson from a film interior is a room that feels personal and usable, not a shopping list of supposed exact matches. Manor Furniture is independent of the filmmakers, cast and Architectural Digest.
