A sofa bed needs to fit two ways: as the sofa you use every day and as the bed footprint you create when it opens. Measure both configurations before deciding that a model is right for the room.

Outside width and depth, plus the space you use to sit down and walk past.
The full converted footprint and the movement needed to change positions.
The actual usable length and width for the intended sleeper—not a seating label.
A three-seater sofa is not automatically a three-person bed.
Measure the closed sofa
Record overall width, depth and height, then mark the footprint on the floor with tape. Leave space for side tables, doors and the normal route through the room. Compare usable seat depth and height too; a compact exterior does not guarantee the seat will feel comfortable.
Then measure the open bed
Check the published sleeping-surface width and length, not just labels such as single or double. Pull-out and click-clack mechanisms can create very different surfaces. Do not treat the sofa’s overall open depth as the mattress length unless the manufacturer explicitly says those measurements are the same.
Allow conversion and storage space
Mark the full area needed for the bed section to extend and make sure it does not block a doorway or the route through the room. If the coffee table has to move each time, decide where it can safely go. For models with hidden storage, check the compartment opening direction and the clearance needed to lift or pull it open.
A measured example: HOMCOM 839-845V70GY
The HOMCOM 2-Seater Sofa Bed with Hidden Storage is listed at 152 cm wide, 101 cm deep and 78 cm high when closed. Its product information says the bed configuration extends to about 198 cm deep and lists a 130 × 67.5 cm storage compartment. That 198 cm figure is the overall open depth, not a confirmed sleeping-surface length; the current product record does not state the usable mattress dimensions, so check those with the retailer before relying on it for regular sleeping.
Check access before delivery
Sofa-bed mechanisms add weight and bulk. Compare the packed dimensions with doors, hallways, lifts and stair turns, and confirm whether feet or arms are removable. Retailer delivery options and room-of-choice service can vary, so check the current terms before ordering.
Quick measuring checklist
- Mark the closed sofa footprint and the fully opened bed footprint.
- Confirm the actual sleeping-surface size separately from overall open depth.
- Leave room for conversion, storage access and everyday circulation.
- Measure the delivery route and verify packed dimensions and delivery terms.

Click-clack or pull-out: test the movement, not just the name
With a reclining-back design, check the instructions for the clearance behind the sofa and any movement needed before the back can lower. With an extending section, check the space in front and where the operating person stands. Do not assume either mechanism can convert while pressed against a wall.
Try the room layout with floor tape before ordering. Move the coffee table to the place it would occupy overnight, then check the doorway and route to the rest of the room. A layout that works only when the table blocks another door is not a practical guest arrangement.
A second example: a compact click-clack format
The HOMCOM 833-830V70 click-clack model has a manufacturer-listed sofa footprint of 170 × 76 cm and a bed configuration of 170 × 92 cm. Those are published furniture dimensions, not an assurance that it suits every adult or regular overnight use. Check usable sleeping length, seams, support and the intended sleeper’s needs before buying.
Model dimensions checked against the Aosom UK / HOMCOM specification. We have not tested comfort or the conversion mechanism hands-on.
Check a corner layout in both orientations
For an L-shaped or chaise model, confirm which side the return occupies when viewed from the front. Do not infer that it is reversible from a photograph. Measure the return as well as the main sofa and check any lifting storage lid separately from the bed extension.
The HOMCOM 839-191V70CG L-shaped pull-out model is a different layout to compare with the compact two-seater above. Choose by the space you can actually allocate, not by a headline seating count.
Questions to answer before a retailer click
- What are the clear sleeping-surface dimensions, and are they separate from the outside bed dimensions?
- Where will pillows, bedding and the coffee table go when the bed is in use?
- Can the sofa convert without moving heavy furniture or obstructing a doorway?
- Do the instructions specify rear clearance, conversion steps, loading limits or extra supports?
- What arrives assembled, what are the package measurements and what delivery service is included?
If a key detail is missing, ask the retailer before ordering. Use our delivery-access checklist to measure the route, not just the destination room. Prices, stock, seller and delivery terms should be checked on the exact retailer listing.
